I was wondering what the spell portal does exactly? I'm sure it brings units that step on it somewhere but where?

The Portal is a 4th level white magic spell that can be casted on grounds, plains, roads or water, 9 cells or more from the nearest enemy castle. Point of entrance is casted in 1 cell radius. When you cast the spell it asks for the coodinates for the other end. It takes 40 hours for the portal to open. The figure in brackets represents the number of units that can pass through, from 8 to 12. A transport with units inside is considered as 1 unit.
If you need ground units to pass, other end should have ground cell(s) in 1 cell radius, same for navy units - water cell(s).

Krakens and Dragons sometimes provide them for free along with some top quality seafood. Or you can build it in the city, as long as you have a mage tower and mandrake roots.

More portal questions...

Is there a limit to the distance that a portal can transport troops? Can you travel to a differnet continent and arrive hundreds of tiles away, on the other side of Mortia?

What do you need to do/have to get the full 12 units to pass through the portal?

1. Only one - no less than 30 cells between entrance and exit points.
2. 4 leadership, 4 white magic, a hero with 40 mages, patriarch staff 4th lvl and luck.

Hrm... When you leave a portal, does it leave you at 0 AP like when leaving a transport?

Also, does it place you in a randomly selected tile around the portal (like when entering the arena), or does it put you "inside" the destination point of the portal and then you move out of it?

Can enemies see either end of the portal, especially in the 40 hours leading up to its being ready?

Yes.

It places units randomly (8 neighbouring cells only).
Navy units can come out to a water cell only (if a ship is not laid down it can enter from a land cell) and vice versa land units can only come out to a land cell. If none of these available they can't enter the portal.

Surely they can. Otherwise what kind of strategy that would be - sneaking in masses undetected.
