Characteristics and determinants of public acceptance of digital COVID-19 contact tracing: a systematic review

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As recently reported in the WHO-ECDC Indicators Framework (1) to assess the public health effectiveness of digital proximity tracing solutions, one of the main obstacles to digital contact tracing ( DCT) is popular acceptance, which in turn is influenced by digital literacy, attitudes and practices. The DCT became known to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the evidence for its popular acceptance has not been thoroughly analyzed. Methods: We performed a systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42021253668) according to PRISMA guidelines to collect, systematize, and critically assess the available evidence on acceptance of DCT in the population. Original studies reporting different measures of acceptance of DCT in the population were included.

CONCLUSIONS: The systematic review was based on 41 articles meeting our pre-defined inclusion criteria, comprising a total of 186,144 interviewees, 50,000 tweets, 5,025 Reddit posts, and 714 written comments. The extraction and synthesis of the data required a qualitative grouping of the results, carried out ex post, in 14 different reference components. They constitute a narrative analysis of action points for public health policy. Public acceptance is a key component of effective adoption of DCT and infection control during infectious disease outbreaks. In assessing the determinants of acceptance of DCT in different contexts, populations and cultural contexts, it is of fundamental importance to inform the planning, implementation and monitoring of public health interventions. The results of our in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis will provide a context for potential improvements and actionable elements and should guide future research to explore how digitalization can serve person-centered care.
